How to Disconnect and Install a Car Battery Today

Are you ready to leave Santa Barbara for a road trip and discovered that your battery is dead? While this is inconvenient, it can be quickly remedied. Just follow these instructions on how to disconnect and install a car battery to get where you need to go:

Take Out the Old Battery

  • Make sure that the car is in park and the ignition is turned off. The parking brake should also be on.
  • Find your battery. It’s usually toward the front of the engine compartment, along either side.
  • Using a wrench, detach the negative (-) cable from the battery. Do not touch the negative and positive terminals with the wrench at the same time. Then remove the negative cable.
  • Next, detach the positive (+) cable from the battery after the negative cable is completely disconnected.
  • If your car has a bracket or something else holding your battery in place, remove it.
  • Remove the old battery. Take it to the retailer where you bought the new battery so that you can get a refund on your core charge.

Replace it With a New Battery

  • Check the connectors at the positive and negative cables for corrosion. Clean with a wire brush if needed.
  • Put the new battery in place. Replace the bracket if it’s necessary.
  • Connect the positive (+) cable first.
  • Connect the negative (-) cable second. Connect these cables in the right order to avoid a short or electrical shock.
  • Start the engine!
